You will: Learn about the legendary Bloomsbury group in an engaging art class and partake in the drinking of fine teas/coffee and the making of very fine art. You will acquire skills in mark making and drawing from observation, learn compositional devices, colour mixing and painting application in the style of Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant.
Price includes all materials and hot refreshments. £270pp in a small, friendly class.
The designs for the interiors of the Cabinet Rooms began with a vision of Charleston house – the East Sussex home of The Bloomsbury Group. With an introduction by Marcus, Rosie will then take up the story of the Bloomsbury group through the art of Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant, adding historical context through a presentation and talk.
The Cabinet Rooms
Week 1 12/6 Introduction and presentation of The Bloomsbury group. Drawing skills – recording accurately from your surroundings. We will warm up with drawing exercises every week to get you into the zone. Exploring techniques and mark making in charcoal drawings. How to find your composition. Recording in a sketch book.
Week 2 19/6 Tonal drawings with ink and charcoal. Following on with a drawing warm up we will also be scaling up and down from sketch book to large A3 paper. Using wax resist, pastels, chalks and ink washes to compose a strong balanced image. Finishing off with details.
Week 3 26/6 Introducing colour. Mixing a variety of mediums to record on coloured ground and coloured paper. Compositional devices.
The Colour Factory
Week 4 3/7 In the studio. You will take our studies/drawings into the studio and produce strong compositions from our sketches, photos and memory. A demonstration in colour mixing and different paint applications.
Week 5 10/7 Venessa bell. Rosie will break down Vanessa’s techniques step by step. Recording from the landscape in the garden. You will then be led into completing your own painting inspired by her.
Week 6 17/7 Duncan Grant. Rosie will break down Duncan’s process step by step. You will then be led into completing your own painting inspired by him. Summary of course.
