After much success, the Beginners Silversmithing Course is returning! This is an intensive and practical course, learning technical skills to take you from being a novice silversmith to confidently beginning your own projects. You don’t need to have any experience to join this course, it is also great to re-jog those memories and get you back in to silversmithing if you have previous experience.
Each student will receive a starter pack which includes..
- A sketchbook
- Saw blades
- Copper sheet to create samples
- A range of silver wires
Each student has their own workspace and set of basic tools. Silver and stones are included for samples. Tea Coffee, biscuits and refreshments.
The course starts by introducing you to Silversmithing tools and basic skills; annealing, texturing and stamping – Including use of texture hammers, the rolling mill and metal forming tools. Creating a range of samples along the way.
You will then go on to learn a range of soldering techniques. Including layering metals and creating joins to make rings and bangles.
With these skills learnt, you can then start to experiment with your own forms and shapes as you learn how to make chains, stacking rings and various findings.
No piece of jewellery is complete without a beautiful finish. Polishing and finishing is a great skill to learn – For this part of the course you will be taught how to sand and refine your work to a high standard using both papers and a polishing machines. You can create satin finishes, use patinas and amazing mirror shines! Leaving with a finished pendant.
The final skill to learn on the course is stone setting. This is beginners stone setting and will introduce you to cabochon setting and teaching you to make a silver gemstone ring or pendant.
The final week is your chance to bring together all of the skills you have learnt and create your own unique piece or use this time to finish off projects you started throughout the class. For this piece you will need to supply your own materials based on your design. I will introduce you to the best suppliers and how to order your silver, including how to best plan your pieces.
There are handouts to support each class, packed full of information.
