The Colour Factory Lightbox has landed……
The Colour Factory Lightbox is a truly unique building designed by Dan Brill Architects in collaboration with the Colour Factory, with the main funding coming from Arts Council England South East, Winchester City Council and Pennington Solicitors. It opened for Making Merry in November 2008. The building itself was the result of an innovative and collaborative project between the Colour Factory, Dan Brill and local builders and craftsmen.
The project was driven by an extremely tight construction budget which influenced the design. Architect Dan Brill said, “It is an exercise in using a minimal palette of materials to maximum effect”. To this end, the building is comprised of a small timber structure clad in transluscent, colourful polycarbonate panels. The playful, colourful nature of the building reflects the ethos of The Colour Factory and provides an environment where colourful and imaginative ideas are realised. Carefully crafted holes in the plywood interior provide pools of coloured light during the day, and glowing circles of colour to the exterior at night.
Jenny Muncaster said, “This building was created over the summer of 2008 by a team of brilliant builders and craftsmen. It is amazing in these times when people are having to cut back how much support we had from local companies and experts, in terms of time, expertise and donating materials to allow the building to be completed. We were truly overwhelmed by the generosity that was demonstrated by the people we worked with”.
