Introduction to oil painting
April 28 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm| £150
My Sunday-morning oil-painting class is based in the Colour Factory garden studio. We paint and draw from life, not photographs, and focus on still life and landscape. Classes are limited to eight, to enable time for individual teaching. Tea and coffee is provided. I’ll supply a list of basic art materials needed before the class begins. Classes are on Sunday mornings, 10 till 1.
It helps if people have some experience of drawing. The aim of the class isn’t so much coming away with a finished painting. This is a series of colour studies, to learn ways to manage an oil painting. I encourage slowing down, working big to small, finding the big colour shapes. It’s a slightly abstract way into the painting. It’s how I work.
People are at different levels so the class is less structured overall. There’s a short demonstration at the start and then I go around talking to people one to one. You will learn a lot.
The next six Sunday mornings are April 28th, May 5th, 12th, 19th, 26th, June 2nd. The cost for six Sunday-morning classes is £150.

You’ll get an idea of my approach to painting from Episode 3 of the 2018 series of Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year, Loch Fyne. I’m one of the contestants.
